Riz Ahmed and Lily James star in Relay, an intense thriller by David Mackenzie. Ahmed plays the role of a broker who protects people from corrupt companies that are forced to become whistleblowers. James plays the role of a new client, who needs protection to stay alive amidst disturbing scientific discoveries, and Ahmed seamlessly plays the invisible man, who protects James at all times. The cinematography is done in real time, especially at Grand Central Station, and Times Square, which increases the tension and realism in the film.  Relay is a fast paced adrenaline rush currently seeking distribution.

All We Imagine As Light

Payal Kapadia won the Grand Prix award at the Cannes Film Festival this year for All We Imagine As Light.  The film follows 2 nurses, Prabha and Anu at key moments in their lives. Cinematographer Ranabir Das does an excellent job portraying the strong bond between both Prabha and Anu. The cast includes Kani Kasruti, Divya Prabha, Chhaya Kadam, and Hridhu Haroon. All We Imagine As Light was co-produced with companies from France, India, The Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Italy. Kapadia is the first Indian woman filmmaker to win the Grand Prix at Cannes.

Shook

Shook is a Canadian film directed by Amar Wala. The story centres around Ashish, a writer from Scarborough who wants to move Downtown, but also feels obligated to make a connection with his estranged father who is diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. The movie features Saamer Usmani, Bernard White, Amy Forsyth, Pamela Male Sinha, and Shomari Downer.  Shook is both in Hindi and English, and is an expansion of Wala’s 2018 short also under the same name. There are many prominent restaurants, cafes, and clubs from Scarborough and Toronto featured in the film that is said to be a love letter to Scarborough. Wala runs Scarborough Pictures, a Toronto based production company that supports racialized artists tell their stories.


Little Jaffna

Little Jaffna is Lawrence Valin’s debut film in Tamil and French. Valin also stars in the film as a police officer from a Tamil family in Paris who has to infiltrate a local criminal gang that is sending money to the Eelam liberation movement in Sri Lanka. The movie is about identity, diaspora, family, community, and conflict. Little Jaffna is based on a short by Valin back in 2018 by the same name. The film stars Lawrence Valin, Puviraj Raveendran, Vela Ramamoorthy, and Kawsie Chandra. Little Jaffna was met with critical acclaim at TIFF 2024.


Santosh

Santosh is a film by Sandhya Suri following the life of a housewife who becomes a widow when her police constable husband is killed on duty. She is then trained to take his place through a government initiative in the North of India. The film stars Shahana Goswami, and Sunita Rajwar. The movie examines what it is like to be a minority female officer dealing with challenging cases involving caste, class, and gender. Santosh also shows the bond formed between both female officers as they navigate challenging cases in a male dominated environment.
