Delhi 2 Dublin: 14 Years Later and Still Going Strong

Delhi 2 Dublin is a Vancouver based band that has been around for over a decade.
Nurtured by equal parts raucous underground bass parties and all ages folk festivals, Delhi 2 Dublin’s always distinctive sound has evolved over the past decade into its own decisive genre, freshly styled, “Subcontinental Pop”—a name that conveys both its deep South Asian roots and its expansive, crazy-fun appeal. The beautifully supercharged complexity of their sound flows from high-level folk, alternative-pop, with contemporary training, blended and delivered across an array of acoustic instruments—dhol, tabla, violin, guitar—and electronic beats——and immersed in smart, heavy, sometimes gritty, and almost invariably joyful beats.
The band recently released their new album We Got This. The new album is an incredible blend of cultural electronic-bhangra tracks with positive melodic-pop lyrics, creating a high energy collection of music that instantly grabs your attention while also leaving people thinking as they’re dancing and singing along.
I had a chance to speak to Sanjay Seran from the band. Here’s what he had to say.
Tell me more about the music you make?
We’ve termed it Sub Continental Pop. Especially this album, it’s a pop album with South Asian influences.
What was your inspiration for the new Album?
We wanted to keep the essence of Delhi 2 Dublin but reach the largest amount of people. We wanted to make an album that would have global appeal with big picture messaging, something that would go on to live a life much larger than us, and I think We Got This is that record.
How did you all get together and start the band?
It was a collaboration project meant to be a one-off performance for Celtic Fest in Vancouver and it basically took off! A year later we decided to take it a step further and solidified it as a band.
What’s your favourite song from the new album and why?
My People because when we wrote it, it changed the directon of the album which resulted in the album we ended up putting out. I also love it because I think when we perform it live I sing it really well, and that always feels good. I truly do love each and every song though. It’s like a group of friends, I have different relationships with all of them, and they all play different roles in my life.
What is the next step for the band?
We’re still in the release process off this record, very much in the infancy. We have more videos to shoot and release and a whole festival season in front of us. So, I think we are just kinda in it, watching this unfold. We’ll be working the release for about the next year, very exciting!
Where do you see the band in 5 years?
That’s always a hard question. I’m very much a go with the flow kinda person… so wherever the flow takes me, I’ll be there. Hopefully playing a huge festival somewhere I’ve never been before!
