The 3 Best Shows You Haven’t Seen Yet

You’ve binged Letterkenny multiple times. You’ve watched HBO heavyweights The Sopranos and The Wire. You’ve kept up with The Affair (like, OMG!). But dig a bit deeper into the CraveTV catalogue and you’ll find a slew of shows that may have fallen off your radar the first time around that are still very much worth your time. Here are three hidden gems you should already be watching.

  1. Enlightened (seasons 1-2). This delicately crafted dramedy showed up on the recently published TV (The Book), where renowned critics Alan Sepinwall and Matt Zoller Seitz placed it in the Top 100 shows of all time. Starring Laura Dern as an executive who follows a very public breakdown with an attempt to find a more meaningful existence and Luke Wilson as her self-destructive ex, each of Enlightened’s 18 episodes is a near-perfect gem.
  1. Deutschland 83 (season 1). Don’t be turned off by the subtitles — Deutschland 83 is an immediately accessible Cold War espionage thriller from the point of view of an East German spy who goes undercover in 1980s West Germany. Winner of the prestigious Peabody Award in 2015, the series beat Stranger Things to the ’80s nostalgia punch. As a bonus, it features a killer soundtrack with classics from New Order, the Eurthymics, David Bowie, and yes, the original German-language version of Nena’s “99 Luftballons.”
  1. Casual (seasons 1-2). From showrunner Zander Lehmann and Canadian indie darling Jason Reitman, Casual puts a heavy dose of cringe into your binge with its look at the ups and downs of 21st century dating. Witness the antics of newly divorced mom Valerie (Michaela Watkins), as she takes her teenaged daughter Laura (Tara Lynne Barr) and moves in with her brother Alex (Tommy Dewey). IndieWire says that with season two, Casual “makes the leap to must-see TV.” With a third season set for 2017, this well-kept secret may be your chance to be the one at the watercooler with the inside scoop.
