Here’s how to host a healthy reunion.
Summertime sunshine calls for patio parties, family barbecues and get-togethers with friends. But balancing these celebrations with a healthy lifestyle and evolving taste preferences can be a challenge. Fortunately, Hubert Cormier, a registered dietitian, offers three easy tips for reunion hosts to keep calories in check, simplify planning for dietary needs, and reduce prep time and food waste.
- Simplify food options. Studies show that when people are presented with many food choices, their caloric intake will likely increase. To avoid this potluck pitfall, assign specific dishes for guests to bring and limit the spread to four or five options. A wholesome menu could include a taco pasta salad portioned into small mason jars as a festive appetizer, one or two main dishes, a green salad or vegetable tray, and fresh fruit for a light dessert.
- Accommodate tastes. Keep guests and their food restrictions top of mind when planning. As a host, prepare dishes that can be easily modified for allergies and food preferences. For a dish that meets many needs, the same taco pasta salad can easily be altered with a gluten-free pasta, such as Catelli’s Gluten Free Fusilli, and topped with seasonal veggies.
- Refresh drink options. Get creative with the drink station and introduce some refreshing, healthy beverage alternatives to help your guests stay hydrated on hot summer days.
